Project Overview
Partnered with Lamarr.AI and FLX Bot, Gensler tried to create a platform that bring all three innovative technologies together for the competition in short amount of time. I joined the project team in the last month before the deadline to quickly put together branding and UX solutions to make the project stunning.
This project focuses on proposing an innovative and intuitive solution for construction industry with the latest technology.
My Responsibilities
Date - March 2022 – April 2022 (1 month)
Team - Designers, Engineers, Project manager, Partners
Role - User Experience Design, Visual Design
Challenges
How may we create a easier workflow for on-site construction manager for dangerous repairing work with latest technology?
Before I joined the team, this project didn't have a UX designer/researcher, so their decesion making was mostly based on the technology implementation. Therefore, With the tight schedule, I decided to mainly focus on two goals -- Visuals and UX flow.
User Research
The construction managers work mostly on site, with identifications to be 45 years old male with 68% of them having Bachelor degree.
Even though we don't have UX research in this project, I managed to learn about the user by looking up statistic and job post of construction manager.
Key Findings
The image below showed the initial UX flow before I joined the project team. Based on the heuristic evaluation, I concluded the issues of the current flow:
1. Inconsistency user interface and design element.
2. Lack of Branding identity
3. Too much unnecessary information and steps
4. Unclear task flow
Ideation
Simplify the process
In the original user journey, there were about 50+ steps that users needed to go through in order to finish a task.
It is very long and confusing for the partners and our team too. Therefore, I simplify and prioritize the user journey so it was clear for everyone.
Ah-ha Moment
Considered it was a competition, we want to emphasize the feature of our app, and that was to enable users to complete the tasks from different industries
all at one app. We needed to proof to the judge that this was a profitable business model.
Design Solutions
Auto-fill information
When the construction managers upload the utilities bill to the app, G-cert will read and transform the data into a trend for quick review.
Upload the Building Model
CM can order the drone to scan the building within the G-cert app. They can also upload the 3D model and identify the anomalies manually.
Order Drone Service
If the CM chooses to order drone to scan the model, a modal with drone companies and information helps user to find the right service provider.
Work in 3D with Ease
By having pre-built angle buttons, user can work on the 3D model space without getting lost.
Identify the Issue Quicker
After the BIM model is analyzed, users need to verify if the issue is correct.
Energy Saving Summary
CM can easily find the report to show to their client and review the repairing results.
Results
“Our product looked way better and trustworthy among all other competitors!”
We won this competition. We saw the judges keep knoding heads with smile while our presentation, and we knew it's a sucessful and innovative proposal. During the reviewing session in the competition, all of the judges spent most of the time talking about our product. I knew that this platform still have a lot of UX problems and technology issues to be solved, but I was proud and grateful of what we can achieve within very short among of time.
Takeaways
Prioritize the work flow
Because of the agency working environment, I usually have less then 16 hours of work time for this project every week. It became super important
of how and what I use my time on. Therefore, I found it super helpful to define the work flow with the team to make sure we’re always on the same page.
